Before you move abroad checklist
Facts and records to gather before a move, so each country's questions can be answered later.
Records to keep
- Every passport you hold, with expiry dates noted (keep the documents, not copies, with you)
- Your current lease or property records in the country you are leaving
- Employment contract and where your employer is based
- Last two years of tax filings in each country
- Pension and investment account statements
Questions to settle with a professional
- Will I still count as tax resident in the country I am leaving, and from when?
- Does the country I am leaving have a departure or exit rule?
- Will I be tax resident in the new country from arrival, or later?
- Is there a tax treaty between the two countries?
- Which social security system will cover my work?
Accounts and registrations
- Which banks will keep my account if I change residence?
- Which registrations should I end or update, such as municipal or health registration?
- Who will receive official mail for me?
